Job Summary:

As a Director of Data Engineering, you are responsible for data management, data governance, and data process delivery for a set of engineering teams, including budgetary oversight, recruiting and leadership across multiple engineering teams, cultivating a positive, customer-centric culture, and ensuring best practices and high code quality.

The Must-Haves

  • BS/MS in computer science, finance, healthcare or business management field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in database development or data management solutions.
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership and driving accountability within teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing best practices in architecture, code quality, and/or engineering process.
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of personality types.
  • Proven success at driving multiple initiatives concurrently on time.
  • Must be able to clearly and succinctly communicate technical details in a simpler, business-friendly manner.
  • Must be able to energize their teams and drive increasingly higher levels of excellence.

The Like-to-Haves

  • 5+ years in an engineer leadership role with proven excellence in recruiting, people development, timeliness of delivery, and financial/budgetary management.
  • Experience managing multiple teams of 25+ colleagues directly and indirectly.
  • Healthcare system experience, especially with claims, member/eligibility and provider data
  • Experience in implementing Agile best practices.
  • Experience in building serverless architecture using cloud technologies or other modern technologies and methodologies. AWS experience a plus.
  • Possess a well-rounded technical background with experience in various technologies and methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB, Snowflake, and/or MySQL a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with .NET services a plus.
  • Scrum Alliance, PMI, Six Sigma, or similar certifications are a plus.
  • Strong experience with Atlassian products: Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket

Responsibilities:

Technical & Solutioning – 40%

  • Act as a high-level technical expert throughout the organization and externally with clients and partners directly, researching, evaluating, and implementing new technology solutions.
  • Keep up to date on emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Drive cross-team collaboration and cross-functional solutioning to ensure high-quality delivery of solutions.
  • Drive ideation within the engineering teams, collaborating with product teams, business users, and senior leadership on architectural and design options.
  • Work closely with product managers/product owners and quality assurance, facilitating the implementation of processes and best practices, ensuring high productivity and quality product delivery.
  • Promote scrum principles and champion timely execution of sprint goals within the team.
  • Identify challenges (technical and non-technical), finding solutions to help the team move forward.

Financial & Productivity – 20%

  • Effectively manage a $5M+ engineering budget, pressing for maximum value for every dollar.
  • Creatively solution engineering capacity needs to meet the goals of the business, via collaborative effort on forecasting and planning 6-12 months in advance.
  • Ensure proper scope estimating, engineering execution, and change management.
  • Implement and champion KPI metrics that encourage teams to continuously improve on execution timeliness and quality.

Leadership & Excellence – 40%

  • Manage a team of engineers dedicated to building software as scalable SaaS products, inclusive of multiple database platforms.
  • Provide technical and people leadership for the engineering team.
  • Lead data engineering efforts by keeping the team accountable, driving timeliness, and producing great results.
  • Mentor managers and leads to drive excellence and productivity within the teams.
  • Perform talent management by recruiting top talent, onboarding team members, continuously evaluating team members, praising exceptional work, and improving team member competencies through coaching.
  • “Represent the brand” well internally and with our clients and partners.
